Three Treasons: The Battles at Astapor, Yunkai and Meereen

three treasons will you know … once for blood and once for gold and once for love …

Daenerys IV ACOK

At the House of the Undying, Daenerys sees visions and is told prophecies relating to her and her family. A prophecy that comes up repeatedly in A Storm of Swords (ASOS) and A Dance of Dragon (ADOD) describes ‘three treasons’. Daenerys tries to interpret this prophecy by matching it to treasons that occur to her, but she does not convince herself that she has done this correctly.

It is my belief that the three treasons are those found in the battles that occur at Astapor, Yunkai and Meereen. Each battle involves a betrayal that leads to victory for Daenerys and each links to one of the themes of the prophecy.

I will first discuss the unsuccessful attempts by Daenerys to interpret this prophecy, feel free to skip this if you want to get to the more interesting part. I will then show how the three battles fit the prophecy with the themes of blood, gold and love.
